Anyone got anything similar from your service, or that of a friend or relative?

I'm reading Vimy Ridge by Pierre Berton right now and in it he talks about the soldiers having a truce. The brass didn't like it.

No way, no how.
Really a bad idea to humanize your enemy.
Might cause one to hesitate at the wrong time.
War is really bad, but if you are in one, you got to deal with it.
I advised Cambodian and Montagnard irregulars for most of 18 months.
Even taking prisoners was unthinkable to them.
We had to stand by and watch.

When I was a kid, an uncle of my dad who was in that war participated in that truce, later go lost behind enemy lines for so long they sent his mother a death certificate. He took it down from his wall one day on a visit and showed it too me.
