I am not a Mauser collector, own and shoot Garands(over 20 of em) came upon this web site and remembered that about 40 years ago I acquired a German mauser that I had forgotten about and was still at my parents house in San Francisco now occuppied .by my sister. I got it along with a nice Arisaka my uncle brought back. I had actually shot a deer with this rifle but just remember how much it kicked, got a M1 and never looked back. Did a little research and found I have a 1936 S27 from Lubeck Machine Work. Bolt is not matching so I guess it is not worth the big bucks. I can't find any swasticas on it like my friend said it should have, Nazi's came in 1933 right? Was this made for export possibly?
The S27 98k was manufactured by ERMA. Early guns had the Weimar eagles but no swastikas. In 1938 they switched over from the Weimar style proofs to the Nazi style proof.
This site has 98k factory codes:

It is S237 my mistake.
If the bolt matches it self but not the rifle it could be a GI bring-back. Bolts were either thrown away by the Germans before surrendering or seperated from the rifles after capture by US forces. This is a very early made rifle and a diserable collector piece. I would value it in 500-700 dollar range---if all other parts on rifle match and condition is VG. If import marked value would drop. Dave, all the #s on the bolt match 2820. The rest of the rifle is 3552 except the bayonet lug 53xx. The stock is walnut and I don't see any marks or stamps anywhere. Not much finish left and no import marks. bore is OK. This rifle has definitely seen use.
