Gentlemen: does anyone know which companies composed the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during World War One? Thanks for your help.

The TO&E for an infantry regiment called for HQ, Supply, and Machine Gun companies and twelve rifle companies.

The rifle companies were organized into 1st Bn (A, B, C, D) 2nd Bn (E, F, G, H) and 3rd Bn (I, K, L, M).

To expand slightly on this reply unlike The Marine Corps companies that were all numbered, the organization of every infantry regiment consisted of 12 lettered companies as listed. The usual administrative organization by battalion was as listed, but was at the discretion of the regimental commander. It was not uncommon for companies to be detached from the battalion of assignment and attached temporarily to another battalion for a tactical operation. In the same vein it was not uncommon for detachments of machine gun battalions, signal and other support troops to be attached (what we now call operationally controlled - OPCON) to brigade, regiment or battalion for a tactical operation.

The 9th Infantry Regiment and 23d Infantry Regiment were components of the 3d Infantry Brigade, a component of the 2d Division (the infantry divisions did not carry the designation "infantry" in the title). The Brigade and Regimental commanders frequently had little to do with the actual conduct of tactical operations. The battalion became the most tactically useful organization in A.E.F.

The organization of the units of the A.E.F. were originally as prescribed in "Tables of Organization, United States Army, 1914." The tables of organization were revised May 3, 1917, January 14, 1918, August 1, 1918 and December 1, 1918, so if you require the precise organization of a unit at particular time you will need to consult the appropriate table of organization.
