Recently I found a Lyman Alaskan scope on www.shopgoodwill.com and wondered if anyone might be interested.

Suspect it's a commercial version. There's a few on the evil E-Bay. Running around $300. One guy thinks he's going to get $56 for a broken one.

Well, its all over. It went for $158.77+s&h, and had 18 bids. I wonder, did anybody here bid on it?

I didn't even bid on it, just not that interested. But was curious how high it'd go.

Steal of the week at $158.77 since the horizontally split 7/8" Redfield rings alone are worth far more than the high bid (bet you didn't notice them, did you?). The scope itself was a pre-war commercial model (s/n 10560) with the sealed "All Weather" adjustment knobs (early Alaskans up through s/n 9000 or so had open type knobs without the sealed caps). Nice enough on its own, and well bought for anything under $200. However, the real prize was the rings since they are the kind needed for a military M84 scope when fitted to a 1903-A4 and routinely bring over $250 a pair, when you can find them at all. Recall that the M81/M82 military version of the Alaskan used vertically split 7/8" Redfield rings on the 1903-A4 which are much more common, but won't work on the M84.

BTW, thanks for pointing out the website, which is an official online auction outlet for Goodwill Industries. I haven't looked at it before, but I'm much more inclined to bid high on something knowing that 100% of the money is going to support a reputable and well-known charity, instead of x.x% of it going to EvilBay. Just my opinion, of course...

Those aren't the normal horizontaly split rings though. If you look closely they have screws on one side and are hinged on the other side.

Ding! I'm wrong! They are vertically split rings, not horizontally like I thought (and blathered on about in my previous post). The photos on the Goodwill auction site are somewhat small, and they all show the scope laid on the side rather than upright. Oh well, still very well-bought at the price.

No other vintage scopes of interest on the site this week (other than a wide-view Redfield 4X) but who knows what will show up next time.
