Does anyone out there have any images, photo's or pictures of an original USMC M40 with the wooden stocks

I notice that this one has a scope base with rounded corners, rather that the squared off 40x base. Interesting! Maybe I don't have to look so hard for a 40x base!
If you were restoring a late M-40, rounded corners would be correct.

True, as seen in the pictures of the late M40 that you provided in the link. The link to the NRA Museum has pictures of what looks like an early M40 with the "green" Redfield, but the base has rounded corners. Also, the text states that the pictured rifle was produced in 1969. Anyhow, as with most U.S. military rifles, one can never be 100% sure of what is truely "correct".
