A friend saw a socket bayonet at a yard sale today and gave me a call.
Maybe we can ID it?
He said approx 14" to 16" long (just a guess).
Socket type with no locking ring. Maybe approx 7/8" inside socket dia.
Triangular blade that appears uncut or broken.
Markings are U S & R J. RJ is not familiar to me>
Any ideas what it could be?
He said the guy wanted $50.00. Thats seems reasonable to me for any US bayonet of that type in good condition. But it would be real nice to know what it is.
Thanks guys

Not really quite enough information, but as a GUESS, the Model 1816.

Blade length is nominally 15 1/2 to 16 inches. Socket interior diameter about 0.825 inch.

Many of them were marked US over an inspector's initials. RJ MAY be Robert Johnson whom I believe was an inspector in the early 1820s.

As stated, $50 is a very fair price for any US socket bayonet in reasonable condition

Thanks for the info.
Is 15-1/2" to 16" the blade length only, or does that include the cocket portion also?
Again, Thanks.

Blade only. Total overall is about 19 inches, dimensions can vary slightly based on maker and time period.
