That's the rarer variety with the drain hole. The cover was made at the Philadelphia QM depot. If you look closely at the inside of the flaps you may see a marking in purple ink of DQP and a date.

I thought the one with the drain hole was the more common one. I have about a dozen with the drain hole, and only 1 without the drain hole.
I've always been told the one without the drain hole was the earlier one and more rare.

Maybe I got it backwards......I have several and only 2 have holes.

The cross flap canteen covers were late issue. Widely issued by the time of Iwo Jima, not so much earlier.

Mine is without the drain hole. These must have been issued for a brief period during WWII because we were still being issued 782 gear with WWII dates in 1962 and the canteen covers were of the common insulated type. The first time I made up a field transport pack, all components except for the brownside/greenside helmet cover and shelter half were in excellent condition and leftovers from the big one.
