Unusual M16 bayonet

I've come across an unusual M16 bayonet; one I haven't seen before. I think that many of us are aware of the RIA experiments using Ka-Bar/USN Mk2 blades to convert into bayonets, and are also aware of the fact that Sarco homemade a bunch of repros of those back in the '80's. They were pretty easy to identify; the main feature was a paintlike coating of battleship grey parkerizing over a usually pitted blade accompanied by new-looking leather handles.

This piece is somewhat similar in that it's made from that type blade, but that's where the similarity ends. On this item, the blade has not been refinished, and the handle is a neatly turned wooden piece with metal ferrules at each end. The crossguard has been taken from an issue M7; markings are "US M7"/ "BOC" indicating that the crossguard at least was made by the Bauer Ordnance Co., a prime contractor for VN era M7's. It came in a standard issue unmarked chocolate brown leather USMC sheath.

At first I thought that it might have been some offshore experiment from some other M16-using country. But, if that was the case, would they not have used one of their own mfg. crossguards, rather than one marked "US"?

What is holding the latch/Pommel on? Is that black stuff at each end of the handle rubber?

Good question! They appear to be leather; the pommel itself is held on by a pin passing through the tang. This pin is not visible because its exit points are below the arms of the latch mechanism. The fit, finish and workmanship on this is first rate arsenal quality...but, other than the crossguard markings mentioned, totally unmarked.

Isn't that the "new" Marine Corps bayonet that replaces the K-Bar & the original M16 bayonet?

No, the "new" USMC knife (the oKC-3) is completely and entirely different...a "new age" knife with a serrated blade and a plastic overmolded handle. The only similarities is that both are blades with handles that attach to rifles...

No, the blade is exactly the same as a ka-Bar or a Navy Mk.2....

Yes! IMHO it's a home made piece. Very nicely executed but a curiosity piece just the same.
