View Full Version : Krag Barracks Cleaning Rod Variations?
Gentlemen:
My question is how many Krag barracks cleaning rod variations were issued throughout it's service? Any descriptions and photos would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
There's a rod with a Brass looped handle that I've read was actually meant for a .22 cal Krag, but I've got two of them and I use them to clean the bores on all of my .30 cal 1903's. they seem just the right size using a single patch that fits tightly in the bore.
Mallory's book only talks of two,one rifle and one carbine. The rifle being 44 inches long of brass and the carbine being 8 inches shorter.Go to page 33 in the Rules and Management manual for the Krag for a picture.

Seven total in three major editions.
LOL Somehow I suspected you would post in.
Thanks for the replies. Does anyone have photos of the variations?
Sorry, I couldn't figure out the pic posting here. I have a pic of my brass barracks cleaning rod with my '98 Krag on the Krag Collectors Association site.

Dick kindly informed me some time ago that the sling was improperly installed...I've since installed it properly.

Seven total in three major editions.
And how many of those seven could be considered to have been issued in large enough numbers to have been considered other than experimental issues?

All of them.
Rarely is one item directly tied to another - only when necessary. Thus the "M-1903" screwdriver was the standard issue for M-1917 rifles (doubled M-1903 production).
The "D" handle barracks cleaning rod introduced in 1905 wasn't the "Barracks rod for the M-1903" as it was the cleaning rod for "all caliber .30 arms." Cementing that, it was made in three lengths: M-1903, Krag carbine, and Krag rifle. Add the .22 editions and you'll see where it heads.
Round handle
D handle (1905)
Model of 1916 (for WW1 use).
Three majors. .22 editions and different lengths for rifles and carbines are added in. So 6 or 7 total. Doesn't count the M1 rod even though that's also valid.
So............how many of those seven and three major variations were made/issued between 1892 until the M1903 rifle was adopted other than the two mentioned of the type shown in the 1898 R&M not counting the rods for the .22s?Ordnance was good at adapting older material to use with new, were the older longer Krag barracks rods cut down for use with the 03?
