View Full Version : Accurate 2700 for m1?
Does any one know if accurate 2700 can be used safely in an m1? I just acquired an 8 pound jug and am running low on 4895.
On Hogdons burn rate chart, 2700 is about the same as IMR 4350 which is too slow for the M1. Unless you have an adjustable gas system you should not use it. In bolt guns it does deliver some real nice accuracy.

Sorta figured you'd get answers like the above. Check out the quickload data parashooter posted for a 150gr bullet here: http://www.jouster.com/forums/showthread.php?1165-M1-Garand-reload-with-VV-N150-amp-150gr-load/page2 You'll see the port pressure is in line with that produced by GI loads. I have used 2700 in my Garand. Back then it was a ball shaped powder. It's made by someone else and the jug I got not long ago is a flattened ball. I noticed with the earlier powder than unless I used a magnum primer I got unburnt balls that fell back into the chamber and dented the cases on subsequent rounds. Might have got bad enough to effect chambering in short order. Mil spec primers might be hot enough to light it, or you might need a magnum.
I have other rifles to load the 2700 I just don't shoot them as much. I hope the powder situation gets back to normal soon. Right now the gas valve is out and no primers of any kind. Thank you
I will not shoot anything in my Garands except 4895 or 4064. It's your rifle so you can shoot anything you want.

I load my Garand rounds with 4064. Gotta go with what works!

Due to the limited availability now, we sometimes have to figure a way to go with what we have. An adjustable gas valve can help in that regard, whether adjustable, or the McCann which has jets one can change. I use the McCann. With them, even Hornady light magnum ammo or a large charge of 4831 or slower powder is usable ammo.
Thanks, ill try to get one of those. I also got 800 180 gr. hornady sp with the powder.

If I remember right, I started with the biggest jet, got full function two jets down from there, and it wasn't slinging the brass so far away. I was using a max charge of 2700 with 150gr bullets, larger charge than what parashooter's table shows. Comes in handy when I shoot my Garand in cast bullet matches too, I just take the jet out, then I'm not throwing brass at the person shooting to my right. One single loads in the cast bullet matches anyway. Believe or not, after 15 years, I haven't yet lost any of the jets. I keep them in a little zip-loc in the butt trap.
