This picture came from a USG National Park Service website about the Pearl Harbor attack, it seems to show Marines with M1917 rifles during the attack. The rifles may be 1903 Springfields with front sight covers and they just look like 1917s in the blurry photo. It is my understanding that Marines were never issued M1917s. The bayonets and scabbards look like 1903 bayonets.

The original Nation Park Service photo Gallery is here http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/npswapa/gallery/albums/album13/PH40Marinesrifles.htm

Zooming in on buttstock of furthest Marine the profile looks like an 03 to me.

Yup 1903s. The 1910 bayonet sheaths are clearly visible.

'03's. Additionally, the M1917 bayonet will not fit in the 1910 scabbard.

This.

Somewhere I saw a picture of a tank crew in North Africa and one of the crew was definately armed with a M1917.

My uncle was in the engineers and carried a M1917 during Operation Torch.

When he landed at Omaha Beach, he had an M1.
