I lucked out and was able to pick up one of those long ass bayonets. Its more like a sword than anything.

What is the purpose of the step where a tube is placed in the barrel bore and then a molten substanced used to seal it? pre-heat treat protection of the rifled bore, sealing prior to blueing or long-term storage of a finished barrel

i belive those are BAR barrels...not sure...maybe an annealment of some sort,, i was wondering that myself.
or Chrome lined...i havnt looked at a BAR barrel in a few years.

Those are BAR bbls , you can see the pressed on gas block in several views .
I don't think they had chroming back then. Could he be putting a lead plug in the bbl to seal it before bluing / parking ? There is a scene where they look to be pluging the gas port before putting it in a machine.

likely parked by 1918...pluging >??maybe so...doesnt look like whatever he,s dripping in the bore is hot,,no gloves...but men were men back then,..safety 3rd
