Anybody heard of a S/C 1903a3 trigger guard with a pad in the front like poyer describes for the A4,s?

Yes. A padded trigger guard is normal for late Remington and Smith-Corona M'03-A3's. The notion that padded trigger guards were exclusive to M'03-A4's is false. Indeed, only late M'03-A4's had the padded trigger guards like their M'03-A3 counterparts.
Hope this helps.
