Hello , I am new to the site, but now from what the wife says I am obsessed . Any way the reason I am posting here today is 35 yrs ago I inherited a 1917 winchester , stamps are all W's . It is fitted with a 1908 warner swasey musket sight #201 stamped ( for rifel # 551××× ) unfortunately not matching serial numbers. My questions ... can and where to find serial # info ? Srs? Military issued sniper rifel ? Value ? ... Any info opinions would be greatly appreciated thank you for your time .

The 1908 W&S scopes were never mounted on M1917's. I have the SN data you are looking for. What is the complete SN of the matching rifle?

jt 551009 serial # what I find interesting I read an older post, someone figured (may have been you ) that w/s were mounted on rifel with serial # all the way up to and ending in 551007 . Thank you for your time jt .

Highest known 1903 SN with M1908 W&S scope is yours as of now. If anyone has one higher, please let me know. I think I would hang on to that scope.

Several scopes were fitted to 1917 as test beds, why not a W&S?

It is a 1908 W&S scope, not a M1913. M1913's were mounted to about every rifle in the war, including the Ross. According to Pershing's communications, the M1913 did not fare well in combat, and he asked for a better platform early into the AEF participation phase. The war ended before a better alternative was selected.

jt well thats exciting , definitely plan on hanging on to the scope . Is the serial number Info something that you have accumulated ? And if it wasn't matched to my 1917 is there some way to find out info on a matching serial number rifel ? Thanks again jt , sorry about all the questions I'm just interested in learning more .

Its been years since I shot it , I hunted with it for many years but not for the past ten . I have never shot it with the scope I was afraid of ruining it .

I have database of scoped 1903's from M1908's to Unertls. If that rifle shows up anywhere, I will post it on CSP. I am personally looking for 1903 SN 353045 to match my own M1908. A matched set is way better than an unmatched set in satisfaction and value.

There was a W&S scoped WWII sniper of the P.14 Enfield which used the Canadian W&S M1913 type scope, but have never seen a M1917 with that scope. However, it's interesting since basically the M1917 has identical rear sight protection ears and I have always been wondering whether they modified the P.14 rifle to be able to mount the Canadian W&S scope.

Compare those pictures to your rifle. Note that the rail on this rifle is different from your rail, which appears to be a M1903 rifle rail. However, can you post an additional picture of your rail showing it from the left side, without the scope being mounted?

Here are some pics of the left side, no scope . You can see that the ear has been milled off .
