A WW2 photo that looks to be in a combat zone with a 1917 Enfield . Any info on that one ?
The one of the 'A4 with the soldered on BAR mag body is always cool . ( It is NOT a WW1 air service mag. Let's not go down that road again . :>) .
I do need to make one up for one of my A4s.

Ira, You are correct - the photo is from Korea. It was depicting the old and new - in terms of winter uniforms. However, it also depicted the old (M1941) and the new (M1C) sniper rifles. I have seen another photo taken at the same time where both Marines are shown closer together and the M1C is easy to identify.

i belive the sniper in snow was taken at Camp Hale, rather then Korea.. but 1950,s time frame, iv seen most of the pics...but a couple of new ones that i havent...

Eric Hammel a rather prolific author, he has written many books of Marines in Pacific and one of his books "Islands of Hell" on page 45 is a photo of a Marine sighting in on a target and I am convinced he has a Lyman target spot on the 03. Many of his books have photos of Marine snipers

Note both stocks are early S stocks with fingergrooves. Look closely at the part of the farther stock just under and forward of the rear mount. That is a divot which to me indicates the beginning of a fingergroove.

Nice observation. Not the left shoulder in a rearward position rather than that similar to the gent in front.

The rifle is not a M1917. Remember they have the rear sight on the rear reciever lug.

If one thinks about the American army and its lack of any "thinking ahead" after WWI is truly a question of history,
sniper can control areas, can control movement, can kill important targets, cause massive confusion and be a real detriment to the enemy. but only a handful of true military leaders knew this, and that is why we fought from behind in WWII (IMHO) of course

i know very little of the brit guns, have three of them and they are quite accurate but the jungle carbine <well lets just say> has one hell of a whack on shoulder and it was designed for physically smaller micronesain trained by brit soldiers, no wonder they did not like it

One of those at the Fort Campbell museum. IIRC, it was developed late WW2. Also is mentioned in Canfield's book.
