Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting on here. I think my first 1903 might be a USMC gun. The serial number is 582189. Please confirm.

Definitely has a lot of signs of being a USMC M1903... Nice rifle for sure.

No hit on your sn but here are the closest numbers with info supplied.

#581949 102539 USS Melville

#582296 120741 USS California (Salvaged)

Interesting that #582296 was shown as salvaged on Pearl Harbor Day.

The stock is an early one - note the "straight wall" on the left side.

Can you please tell me more about the stock. The gun also have a second cartouche RA-P and the barrel stamp is HS 6-44.

Early M1903 stocks had the "straight wall" on the left side, rather than the "dogleg" featured on later stocks.

The top stock is the later "dogleg" variety; the lower one is the earlier "straight wall" type.

While yours is an earlier stock, it has been modified with the addition of a second stock bolt; the "curved" part on the right side has been broken off.

Herschel- that is pretty interesting about the next closest SRS rifle being reported as salvaged on Pearl Harbor, where the California was sunk- but later refloated.
