Found a butchered 03A4...It has most of the markings polished away.. The Z on the serial number is unreadable but the Upside Remington is readable barely.. The serial number is of the small numbers and is 4992781.
When was it made?
I snaped it up , the gun shop thought it was a A3.. $435.00
I will convert it back and make it a shooter...
Haven't posted on this sight for several years,, thanks, Les

I'm not sure it would have a Z in the serial number but it was right on the cusp of those. Most likely it was made in Oct of 43 but most were not accepted until Feb of 44 due to scope supply problems.
Nice score, pictures?

Jan, 1943 the first couple A4s were tested, production went all the way through 43 to the first part of 44.
Z numbered A4s were the second group produced. june of 43 to sept 43. give or take.

A leading "Z" was applied to Remington serial numbers whenever a duplicate serial number was detected.

In March of this year the CMP auctioned a stripped A4 receiver serial numbered Z 4992133. So they are not unknown but they are not common either.

The so-called "Z series A4's" consisted of a batch of approximately 2,980 consecutively numbered A4's which came about when A3 production accidentally was allowed to run into the serial number block assigned the second order of A4's (4,000,001 to 4,015,000) . The leading "Z" was added to the serial number of each of these A4s - about 2980~ rifles.

Next, a new s/n block starting at 4,992,001 was created for the balance of the second order as well as any potential future orders.

The "Z" was also used on A3's when duplicates were encountered but in those cases because the A3 used a larger font for the s/n the "Z" is place on the line above the s/n.

Did they cut the barrel?

They did not cut the barrel but they removed any markings except for the punch mark under the sight.. There is some almost like writing under the chamber area.. I'll take a pic and post it soon..
I had a new cmp C stock and 03a3 parts and started the it's return to war horse config.. Only need 60 bucks from numeric. My stock of 20 two groove barrels may be needed if this barrel does not print right...
I'll slug both ends of the barrel, it looks very good/ someone cleaned it and kept it oiled.. However it is a polished 03a4 .. Hope it is a one hole gun// range test soon..
Question/// The scope and mounts sold on E-store have they got any reports on these ?????

I don't believe any have shipped yet. On another site a poster had stated shipping will commence next month. I looked on the Leatherwood/HiLux/Malcolm site and did not see any mention.
