I have this Remington 700 that was built out in CA and can shoot 1/4 MOA.
It is a SFP scope and now I am confused about how to sight it in, It is a Mildot retical and the manual says the Mills work on the high setting. (8.5X25)
I understand that since it is a SFP scope that the retical does not change sizes as the power is changed". I thought that once you had a scope zeroed for say right on at 300 yards you were done. But I am hearing that if you have the power on say 10X your POA is not the same.. Darn it what am I missing????? Be nice as I am old=)

you probably sight in at 100 yds to get the dots to work-instructions ??

The early variable scopes suffered from change in point of impact when changing power, but no modern scope should have this problem. The mil-dot system estimates range through a mathematical calculation. You need to either be very good at doing math in your head, or have a calculator handy for using the mil-dots, and have the rifle on a steady rest for accurate reading of the mil-dots.
Just my opinion, but in civilian applications the mil-dot is more something to look at rather than having a practical application. They are being sold in hunting scopes, with the buyers not having a clue as to how they are to be used.
The rifle pictured is a Mike Lau built M40A1, and while the Leupold Mark 4 M3 has mil-dots, I have never had an occasion to use them.

if your scope changes impact when you change the power ring, it has issues.
i dont dont have a need for Mil Dot scopes, but..i tried one and liked it..
how i set mine up.
i zeroed in at 100 yards, moved to 200 yards, and matched the drop with whatever dot it came to.
same out to 3.
so, in therory.
if i had a coyote at 200 yards, id hold said dot on em, and hit every time..right??
K, the scope i had was a POS anyway, and wouldnt ever hold zero.
it was a Leupold, but used hard, i sent it back, they repaired it..i moved it down the road.
i have Denver made Redfield on most of my rifles. they work very well,
i set my M700 in .308 for 1 inch high at 100 yards, hits 3 inches low at 200, and 10 inches low at 300. and so on...
i dont adjust the scope, just hold over, and hit what im aiming at...lots of dead critters, and clanging steel cant be wrong...
if you know your rifle, youll be ok....

On the old "won't hold a zero" Leupold M3 I just dial in the yardage and if I guess close enough it is on.

Your zero won't change (providing the scope is working properly), but your MIL-DOTS will only subtend the right amount at the power setting specified by the manufacturer. If you are aiming w/ the center cross hair all is well at any power, but if you are using one of the dots OFFSET from the center, your POI will change or your range estimation will be off when on different powers.

If the scope has a second focal plane, then the power ring has to be set to 10x or the power the manufacturer has specified. But if the scope has a first focal plane, then it doesn't matter what the power setting is.

Thanks guy. I feel a little better now. I bought a Bore Sight yesterday and the scope was only a few clicks off. 19 degrees here in TX today so the range is out. But soon I will go hunting for paper=)
Thanks again

Some times you have to fiddle with it.

Normalizing the range clicks to the pointer so I have full range and windage clicks when zeroed and locked @ 100y. That way I have 32 1" range click ups and 16 L&R 1" clicks @ 100 yards good to 1100 yards.

How does it shoot in terms of MOA?

Ok here are five at 100y but they arn't 100y rifles. Much happier at 450~600.

Thanks again for the help with this new gun. A number of guys thought I should keep the 8X25 Leupold and see how it worked.. Well I'm glad I did.. There happened to be an X Marine Sniper from VN at the range the morning I went, and he was a great help..
( he was shot five time and retired after 20yrs, my hero forever!) It took me 20 rounds to get it right because I dumber than a box of rocks, but we finally got her pretty close. Didn't even need the spotting scope at 300 yards because the 25X on the Leupold was plenty.. I might still buy a S&B, but this wasn't bad. Once I got her 2" high at 300 yards I zeroed the adjusting knobs.. Is that the correct thing to do?

Thanks again

You need a scope that is on the FFP.. All your mils will be correct.

This one has a RFP, but it shot pretty good. So now I guess I have to do the math=(

Try setting one of these up after it has sat for 45 years.

I have a friend who wins 1000m matches with the M41, the scope is zeroed for 300m, against all the modern rifles the UK military and national teams can bring. Now he shoots with them, no doubt. I get lost after 325m today.
