I wonder what (PED DEV) means?

Something to do with the Pederson Device?

Yes. The Pedersen Devices are all "REMINGTON BRIDGEPORT" marked.

So did all the Mark Is have to cycle through Remington? Surely not. Maybe they just got a lot of rifles to test them in for interchangability?
