View Full Version : just a little confused about 7.62 NATO vs. .308 WIN
this has probably been beat to death already so my apologies. a dear friend, an old school marine friend of mine passed recently and willed me a new HK 91. i have been trying to find out what ammo should be run thru this and everything I see is the 7.62 NATO round is at a lower pressure than .308 WIN. however a lot of people selling ammo are listing the 7.62 NATO and the .308 WIN as the same round. are they or are they not the same round. any insight would be welcomed and appreciated.
My understanding is the NATO round is loaded to less pressure than .308. Since I reload I don't buy .308 loaded ammo.

Yes, yes you have truly opened the beat-to-death can-o-worms. :)
Google the 7.62/308 question and feel free to read the 10,000 hits you'll get.
So I'll stay away from that but to answer your question: I too have a 91 and shoot all the 762 Surplus thru it- that is what it is designed for. With the 308 commercial- I just stay in the 145gr-168gr range of bullets and have been fine.
PS- since you are new to the rifle------- The chamber of the HK weapons are fluted and so the fired brass has long burned marks running the length of the case. It looks #$$%^ horrible but the case is fine and can be reloaded. (Some shooters unaware of that see the brass and think it's ruined or there is something wrong with the rifle)
