Is there a video on adjusting a 98 Mauser stock trigger.

The 98/47 I have must be about 30 lbs at least

Thanks

I'm not aware of a video but there's plenty of written material on the subject for the 98 Mauser or the very similar 1903 Springfield. Mostly it comes down to making certain that there's no binding from the stock against the trigger group parts, sear pin is not binding, ect. With the receiver out of the stock, does the problem still exist ? The engagement surfaces between the trigger and sear are commonly polished (stoned) to minimize drag against each other. The surfaces of the "humps" at the top of the trigger (which provide the "2 stage" trigger pull) can be lightly polished. If all of this appears to be in order, something else to look at is the coil sear return spring. the 2nd stage pull can lightened by grinding .5, to a full coil,
off the spring .BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERLY LIGHTEN/SHORTEN! A 30# pull is awfully out of spec. If there are no obvious binding or polish issues, it could be that you simply have a defective spring, GI spec replacements are not difficult to find. I have an Australian #1 SMLE that had a trigger pull so stiff that it was painful to pull up the 2nd stage when I 1st received it! After inspection I determined that band type sear return spring was the issue. Obviously there wasn't much of an inspection done on it after its last arsenal overhaul. Apparently the steel in the spring was too hard as when I squeezed the U shaped spring with a Vise Grip it snapped in half before it hardly bent! I obtained a GI replacement spring from Gun Parts Co. and that fixed the trigger pull problem entirely.

Kcw is right I have had several Mausers and none of them had what you are describing. Now if you are used to the typical modern hunting trigger then a military Mauser might seem wrong . Will the weight of the rifle fire the gun (checking the gun to make sure its unloaded of course ) ?

I started by checking the trigger pull before I did any thing. The action was out of the stock so it wasn't rubbing on anything.

It really wasn't 30 lb more like 15 with lots of crunchiness between the break.

I did polished the sear and bolt and the receiver where the trigger humps rest, will go back and polish the trigger humps.

I did get it down to about 4 1/2 on the last stage.

I will find another coil spring as a spare and take a little off it.

I don't want to make it into an Anschutz target trigger.

The rifle in question is a 98/48 Polish.

Thanks for the help

Here is a picture of a simple fix for length of pull. Weld a steel tab on the trigger and tap for a fine thread screw. If the weight of pull needs to be adjusted, cut the sear spring a little at a time and check as you go. It is not necessary or advisable to mess with the sear.

How does this modification affect the "length of pull"?

It makes it a single stage trigger instead of a two stage.

USGI trigger pull spec on the 03 Springfield is 3-6 #'s which should serve well to for a GI 98 mauser I would think. If you now have a smooth, crisp 2nd stage "let off" I would think that you're pretty much where you want to be.

Instead of putting in a screw: I bought a Mexican Mauser many years ago that had a rolled-up chink of matchbook stuck under the sear to take up the slack. Also, someone had managed to put a visible upward bend in the fore-stock. Thinking it was a rough-and-ready Mexican "national match" mod.
