Hi, does anyone know the serial number ranges for 1899 carbines? Also were some 1899 carbines made with the 1896 rear sight and would the rear sight have the letter "C" stamped?

1899 carbines cover a wide range of serial numbers, with the lower numbers being the earlier guns. All are marked 1899. These carbines have four different style rear sights as originally produced and will be date specific. Earlier carbines were updated in regards to rear sights so there are numerous combinations that are as produced or upgraded. Buy a copy of Mallory's and Brophy's books. The second Mallory book has an added bonus as it contains most of the serial number data that is commonly available.

+1 on what Kragrifle said. Basically, if the receiver is marked 1899, it is a carbine. Springfield made no rifles marked 1899. If the sight is marked with a C, it's a carbine sight... if it's not, it's a rifle sight.
