View Full Version : Unissued Early Remington O3A3 Question

This walked in a small show today. It's probably the nicest 03A3 that I have seen in person, especially as early as the serial number is. Looking at it, I really don't think it's ever been fired other than maybe the proofing. If it has, it hasn't been much. I also don't think it's ever been taken apart. There is still a lot of cosmoline everywhere in the protected areas and in the barrel. I had thought about doing a detailed cleaning, but figured maybe this one I should leave alone.

Looking at it, it appears 100% original and correct to me. The only thing I question is the parked bayonet lug band. But I think this early they were supposed to be parked, but I can't remember for sure.

Anyways, what do you guys think? I'm thinking this is almost unfired, especially looking at the inside of the receiver. I can't get good enough pics to really show how little wear there is inside the receiver, but everything looks about like new. And would you guys recommend a complete tear down to clean all the cosmoline out, or just leave it? Also is this early enough that front bayonet lug band is correct?

This is one honestly that looks better in person, than it does in my pics. My photo lights really sort of wash out some details, but it's a really nice looking rifle in person.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations!

You hit the jackpot! That's an exceptionally fine rifle. The rifle appears completely original, including the parkerized bayonet band. I recommend leaving the rifle as is and not touch a thing.

Congratulations again!

Nice rifle Norton! I note the '03 style cocking piece and the number on the flat of the bolt handle. Is it a 3 or 8?

Mike, It's an 8 in a circle.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I was excited to see it at the show. It's amazing what walks in the door sometimes.
