Is this state marking on this early 99 carbine a volunteer unit or maybe an early state prison system gun? I've seen some trapdoors with state markings on the buttplate but not Krags.

Brophy describes Stevens-Pope barreled 22 cal rifles purchased by Ohio, Washington, New Jersey and Pennsylvania state militia units for training purposes. I have a carbine length barreled Krag marked NJ on the buttplate like the one pictured.

Pretty neat 1st year gun with low serial number for an 1899, pre-hump handguard. I cant remember if its in Bropys or Mallory's book, but weren't only a few hundred 1902 carbine sights made?

Reports are that 1000 sights were produced. Most of these went to rebuilds, but there were reported 180 carbines made in FY 1902. I have one with 1902 carbine sight with modified 1898 binding screw. Saw one at Baltimore, better than mine, with later 1902 milled binding screw. Alas, I had spent my money on an 1892 rifle that I never dreamed I could own, so no complaints.
