At a gunshow last weekend I spent some time with an interesting 1903 rebuild. An 810,000 numbered SA with a 1938 SA barrel was stocked in a prewar "S" marked C stock with a single circled block P firing proof, bearing the D1836 stamp. Muzzle was a little under 1 and throat was 2. The gun had a solid, attractive appearance and patina . The gun appeared to have been together a long time. I passed on the gun at $850.00.

What drew my interest was the boxed SPG cartouche. Not SA over SPG but simply SPG, with letters smaller than several SA/SPG cartouches in my horde. The box was about 1/3rd the height of an SA/SPG stamping, had rounded corners and it appeared genuine. I've never seen this cartouche before. Can any of you guys enlighten me?

SPG was Stanley P. Gibbs, an inspector at Springfield. I have never seen an inspection stamp as you describe.

Wasn't his full name Stanley Ployart Gibbs? Just to be extremely accurate ;-)

€dit: found in my list the following entry:

SPG ...... Samuel P. Green, Col. ..... M1903, M1 .30 Rifle ................. 1938

I have not seen the stamp you describe. I question its authenticity.

Sometimes, SPG is incorrectly identified as "Samuel P. Green" - this is incorrect.
