Well I am looking at this rifle from a friend and customer. Better pictures to come as he said the finish is not rusted as the camera made it seem. Waiting for serial also to see if it is in the SRS. What do you think the value is on these? Markings are supposed to be from a N.Y. regiment. Rick B

It is New York National Guard 34th. Sep. Co. stationed in Geneva N.Y. In 1898 In 1898 2nd-8th-34th-41st.Separate companies were musterd for service as the 3rd. Infantry regiment NYNG. Mustered in 17May, 1898 mustered out 10 December 1898. Had training in Virginia and Pennsylvania and never left the United States. Value based on the pictures 650-750. Nasty stock crack at rear band. Perhaps finish is better that the pictures?. Hope this helps.

+1 on $650-$750. Looks to have browned rather widely. How's the bore and crown?

Being photographed at high noon in the sun isn't kind to ANY old gun, period!

There are more than a few "mint" pieces whose owners wouldn't dare show them like that.

I also have faith that Rick will make that crack go bye-bye!

Still has some case-color (probably a lot on bottom of block, proud wood, very shallow extractor dent (= little wear) - what's not to like? A little oil, and a more flattering light, and you have a really nice rifle. Congratulations!

Rifle has arrived and sadly poorly packaged. The box was 6" square but the rifle was wrapped in one layer of bubble-wrap on ends and some plastic over the breech with hammer cocked which was slammed into the stock. It also could have been kept better and for sure the bore could have been cleaned out. Day light makes it look rusted when in direct sunlight which is is but there is blue left and indoors you see it better but lots of white areas on top. Here are a few indoor shots. Rick B

Are you saying that being in the sun for less than an hour would be damaging to the gun? Or that it is less than flattering light for pictures?

The latter, of course! [GRIN]

As Dick said the Latter. It looks good to me in or out of the sun and I am going to oil all the metal and have the bore wet down with CLP now. I have to carefully get the rear band spring to release as it is compressed and I think it is from the original hit that cracked the other side. I will take it apart in a few days when I get time as i am healing up from an Emergency room visit Friday after a week of gut pain. Got sick by Friday evening and found I have Gallstones and Diverticulitis that caused the main issue. Darn Meds are really messing with me balance and nausea wise. Rick B

Rick, sorry to hear about you not feeling well, I know it seams like it will not go away but in time it does.
You'll be back at it you will see.

Nice trapdoor

Does the windage work on the rear sight, or has it been pinned?

Rick B

Windage works fine so they hadn't staked it. Something they did so Cadets didn't mess with it?? Rick

From what Dick has told me, "windage" adjustment was a new-fangled concept. CO's could have the rifles delivered to their units with the windage pinned. Guys pick up these weapons today and find that the windage knob is "frozen"....when in actuality, the rear sight had a hole drilled into the underside and a pin was driven in, then polished smooth with the surface. All that you can see is the small buff mark. My Rod Bayonet has the pinned rear sight.

You heard what happened then Teddy got hold of the first rod bayonet 03? He easily snapped it off and that was the end of that!:icon_lol:

Just curious. was the cleaning rod in the buttstock?

Another funny. When out troops arrived in France and were ordered to turn in their 03's for M1917's, one soldier made such a fuss, that the officer decided to take another look at the rifle. It was serial number ONE! Somehow it got issued. The rifle was immediatlly shipped back to the arsenal!!!
