I stopped at a small gun-store yesterday specifically to wheedle on them a bit on a Parker shotgun price and to just look around.....got the old shotgun bought.

While I was waiting I briefly examined a slick old Springfield 1903 rifle in a 'C' stock. A high numbered gun with a 1920's dated barrel(if I recall properly)....

I really didn't pay that much attention to the Springfield as I had a 'Trojan' on my mind...however as soon as I drove off..I got a feeling I should've looked the Springer 03 over better...could possibly be a National match rifle setting right there in front of me and I set it back on the rack..

Really I don't think it's a NM rifle...but I don't know nuthin' about NM 1903 rifles either.

So just what clues do I look for if I go back and examine the 1903 Springfield?

I'll get that serial number.....anything else?...star markings on barrel?...where would you look for that?

The key is the serial number and barrel date. Get that and we can go from there. Also, any markings on the stock.
