Case gauge?

I've been looking for a maximum length case gauge for 7.62x54R. L. E. Wilson doesn't list one and nor does Midway USA. Has anyone purchased one and from where?:icon_scratch:

Harbor Freight. $10. Works for all cases up to 6" long.

If you were looking for one of these cylindrical devices designed to gauge both headspace and case length, consider that it's not nearly as useful for a rimmed cartridge as for rimless - since the case's headspace dimension is established by rim thickness rather than shoulder position.

That's what I'm looking for. Seems they are not made by L. E. wilsion or anyone else. I have them for many calibers I load for, just not for 7.62x54r or .460 S&W magnum.

I suspect there's very little demand since very few of us select or alter case rim thickness, leaving the case-length function the only useful feature of the gauge - and that's just as easily performed with the simple, cheap caliper. There is probably a limited supply of 7.62x54R handloaders devoted to collecting finely-made tools for which there is little practical need.

I only alter the rim on 1 caliber and it's not this one. I like to use the gauge to make sure my set up is correct and that the reload will chamber. I'm having a problem with sizing 7.62x54r. The die seems to form a wrinkle close to the base. I'm not sure why this happens and it's not large but the reload will not chamber. Futher study will be required.

This is the deal, you will not find a "case gage" in 7.62 Russian, you may have to invent one :)

I'm starting to suspect the chambers are overly large on russian rifles and lets the brass swell a bit too much. The decap/ sizing die shaves a small amount of brass and puts a wrinkel close to the base. I want to reload non corrosive for my SVT 40, but otherwise I shoot corrosive in my bolt guns.

On a different, but different note on reloading.

I saw a Berdan to Boxer primer conversion using a 1/4 drill and slice of 1/4 copper tubing put inlace by an RCBS swage system.

I am going to try this. It will work for the large 762X54 and 303 British primers

joem, we traded for a SVT 40 semi back in 1982 or so & bought a set of C&H dies for it............ that are of very good quality......... at the time I think we paid $30.00 or $35.00 for a 3 die set.... The only brass we reloaded in this die set was 7.62X54R Norma & we got 3 to 5 shot groups of 1 1\/2" or so at 100 yards prone using bean bags back then. The bore is heavily frosted, but still did pretty fair..............
