Hey everyone raising funds for a a few new purchases so this is all up on the chopping block...
1903 Mark I Project/Shooter
Selling this Mark I. It would be a fantastic gun but unfortunately someone drilled into the side of the receiver for peep sights which have been removed (but holes need to be filled). The barrel is a Springfield 11-18 so the barrel "may" be original. It at least falls into the correct serial number block (1039497). I do not have a hand guard that matches this rifle. Only the stock (scant stock). I had a spare cutoff which I installed. It's a bit stiff it may need some more grease but I wanted to add as many spare parts as I had to it. No import marks that I can find on this gun.
The stock so far is missing. Buttstock, Sling Swivel, Retaining spring and handguard. Not very serious parts.
The bore is bright and shiney a few small specks of dirt but I do not see any pitting. It cleaned up rather well.
Also should be noted the triggerguard is a 1903A3 and the rear barrel band is a spare I had which came off a greek return rifle but it's not a stamped 03-A3 barrel band, just a greek replacement 1903 barrel band.
I had a bolt that matched the receiver a lot better but it didn't headspace properly. It was just barely above passing. So I threw in this spare I had laying around and it headspaces perfectly. The bolt has some minor surface pitting but I put it in there to be functional. If you are interested and would like the original bolt I can put it back in the receiver. If you look at the space between the lug and the receiver the bolt has a lot of life left in it.
I had a friend inspect this and he gave me the following readings.
MW +1, TE -4. And head spaces correctly. (I do have the tooling for inspections so I'm going on his word).
But when dealing with firearms I highly recommend you have your own gunsmith inspect it or do it yourself. I have not fired this 1903 (had it less than a year). Just to be on the safe side.
This will make an excellent shooter if you want something to take out to the range in place of your safe queen. And it's a Mark I which is more uncommon than your standard high number 1903. You just need a few small parts and fill in the holes. And the possibility that the barrel is original is also nice! If it's not the original barrel it's at least correct.
Selling this as a shooter because of the drilling. Otherwise I wouldn't let it go. I would have installed more to complete it but I ran out.
If I didn't already have 2 other "shooters" I'd probably just fill in the gaps and keep it but I am running out of room in the safe. So sacrifices must be made
The description is a bit long but trying to be as honest as possible and not throw out any surprises. If you have any questions please ask!
