Mark: Thanks but no thanks - kinda pricy (note no bids) - and - what would you do with it? If you didn't have a "parade rifle" (never have met a collector of same) which needed a sight, there'd be no reason to buy it. To strip and refinish it would be highly impractical from a dollar standpoint. Were you by any chance thinking it was a carbine sight? Color me puzzled.

Look at his other listings. There are priced similarly and some have bids on them.

Dick, that was me being facetious on all counts. I think my non-rare 1896 sight cost maybe 40 bucks?

Now that I have everyone's attention I DO need a thumbscrew for the elevation slide for the 1901 rear sight.....

I suspect when I get bored in retirement, if that happens, that's going to be one of the things I do. One of the dudes at work was handed a small metal mill type thing. Austrian. Having no use for it, and hearing I worked on my guns, he gave it to me. In addition to being a small metal lathe it had accessories with one being a screw threading setup. Each tpi needed a pattern. I bought a box of the patterns. The odd sizes are there to include 26tpi.
What I'm mainly after is sight screws but I'll want to churn some of the others out. It'll be time consuming but amusing.

1903 knobs work Mark, Numrich has them.
Gee guys, maybe it is one of the really rare stainless steel sights!
Yuch, yuch, yuch,

Bob, that's great to know, thanks!
Maybe I'll reveal a stupid move here but I took a complete 1898 off Gunbroker without a single opposing bid. It had no reserve, shipping was but 30 bucks and the guy selling it honored it as an antique so there was no FFL.
I communicated with the seller and the stock may have shellac on it. The biggest evil I could find was it's lack of a thumbscrew on the elevation bar. He thought the stock had been sanded. I don't think it has. It ships Monday so we'll find out some time next week.

Since it is a done deal, and no one can snipe you, what is the auction number? You never know what you will find or what the competition will be. I just took a VERY rare trapdoor off GB against only one other bidder. I would have gone considerably higher than I ultimately had to. Unfortunately, the seller was adamant about shipping all cartridge firearms - no matter what the age - "on the books". I reluctantly agreed, knowing I would never get another chance.

Well, in for a penny in for a pound. Here 'tis, 480.00 shipped to my door:

I look forward to your assessment. When it comes to reality I've got broad shoulders so don't hold back.
It's no show stopper but neither is it bubba'd. Hopefully I'll be off to the range with it this weekend. AND the seller offered a return if I decide I don't want it.

Other than the fact that it is not exactly a closet queen, I do not see anything at all "wrong" with it. With that low a number it quite possibly could have seen service in the Philippines. You were unusually unlucky on the number - not often are there so many near misses:
143601 Minn NG
143602 Minn NG
143604 8th Inf.
143610 W. Va NG
This is, BTW, a PERFECT example of why "close" numbers do NOT mean much.
Hope it turns out to be a good shooter for you.

Dick! Thanks for all the info. I saw nothing wrong with it either and I thought the price was right. Worst case scenario I'll be out the shipping if I send it back.
