View Full Version : Need a load for 1/8 bull barrel
One of my AR's has a 1/8 twist 24" stainless bull barrel. I've been fooling with it for several years but I can't seem to find a load that's accurate. I've tried 55gr, 62gr and 69 gr bullets both Sierra and Nosler. Not that good. Does anybody have a load that might work?
You might try 21.5 gr. IMR 4198 with 55 gr. bullet and 21.0 gr. with a 62 gr. bullet. The IMR 4198 has always been an accurate powder with the .223 and 5.56. Just have to find the sweet combo for your rifle. Velocity will not be the highest but it will be accurate.
Try a heavier bullet. Sierra makes 77, 80 and 90 grain Matchkings. Hornady makes 75 and 80 grain A-Max and 75 grain HPBT's. I'd be thinking IMR4064.
I'll try dropping the powder charge a bit and see if that helps. I have to order some more bullets znyway.

Is it a 223 or a 5.56? If it's a 5.56 it probably has a longer throat. You might try seating the bullet farther out.
It's a 5.56 but the bullets can't be set any further out or they can't feed from the mag. I'm within .010 of the mag face. Droping the load seems my best bet or order some much heavier bullets.

What powders have you tried. Varget, RL15, H4895, and TAC are the top rated powders by HP shooters.

I like 23.5gr of TAC with a Sierra 77gr Matchking. Same with the 80 gr Matchking but those won't fit in your magazines and need to be single loaded. TAC is a spherical powder and meters nice, temperature tolerant and burns pretty clean. A buddy of mine bought a couple 8 lb jugs of Hornady LeverRevolution powder and swears by it. He found some for $125/xxxx a real good deal. It's a medium burning powder in the Varget/TAC/4895 range. I shoot a Rock River NM with a White Oak Armament 1/8" barrel. You might look for some Nosler 77s, too, I've seen good deals on them.
I've tried TAC, Varget and 4895. Right now I have Accurate 2230 which works super well in my Colt match Target 1/7 twist. I think that's what I'll try for now.
DANG! Went to load some test bullets for Sunday at the range and I have no more 69 gr Nosler's. I don't remember using all of them. I must have CRS I guess.

When you get more bullets try WW748, I think you will be pleased. I had the same problem trying to find a 100 yard load for my NM AR 1:8 twist years ago. Nothing I tried worked. One of the older shooters told me 52 gr Sierra MK and WW748 and then 69 gr SMK with WW748 for 200/300. Amazing accuracy out of my rifle.
Well I reduced the powder charge to min and increased it by 1/2 gr up to the max. I used a 69 gr Nosler. Everything was CRAP. I've loaded 10 each 75 gr hp's . If they don't work then > My next time out I'm taking several 30 round mags and I'm going to see just how hot I can get that barrel. My version of heat treating.

24 - 25 gr of AA 2520 and 69 gr Sierra MK you can't go wrong. 24 -25 gr of Varget & 69 gr Sierra works well too. Work up loads as per normal safety precautions.
I loaded some 75 gr HP's with 2230C. If it ever stops raining I'll try them out.
I tried out the 75 grs and that was the worst group I ever shot. Group size was 14 to 16" @ 100 yds. On my other rifles 69 gr for the 1/7 and 62 gr for the 1/9 twists. My thinking is something in between would be 65 gr. As soon as they are back in stock I'll try them. If that doesn't work then the barrel is history.

Have you tried 69gr bullets in this barrel?
Have you tried 69gr bullets in this barrel?
Yes. I tried 69 gr seirras and Noslers. NO Good groups with either. Also tried some surplus powder that shoot very well in my other rifles. I did fire 50 rounds rapid fire. One 30 and a 20 rounder. Barrel very hot. Shot some 62 gr SS109. Groups much better but as it cooled down groups opened up. Maybe fire lap is in order or hack saw to finish.

you will be happier with the groups using a 77 sierra match king (or 75 grain hornady) bullet in that 1 in 8 twist barrel.
You can seat them deep enough to fit the magazine too.
I've used VARGET for years now. 24.5 grains, 77 Sierra Match king, and Standard Small Winchester brand rifle primers in LC brass.
REMEMBER.... ALL DISCLAIMERS APPLY. MY RIFLE CHAMBER / THROAT IS DIFFERENT THEN YOURS. REDUCE ALL LOADS 10 % AND WORK UP FROM THERE.
