Here are a few pics of a 1910 Rock Island NRA Sales rifle. It has most of the 1910 features as expected.. 1910 dated cartouche, 5-10 barrel date, hand guard with sight groove and clips and single bolt GG stock. It also has a smooth buttplate and high wood stock.

The stock has a brass threaded insert added to the stock comb. Im thinking it was added for a peep sight as it is near the right eye when shouldered. The stock also has had an oval piece removed and puttied (?) over on the underside between the trigger guard and rear band.

Any thoughts on the rifle or stock additions?

TIA

Greg

Thanks! The rifle is in about 90% original finish and appears text book correct other than the 2 stock additions noted. After 104 years wonder what stories it has?? Lol

I'm not sure what the threaded hole in the stock comb was for. Installation of an aperture sight is as good a guess as any.

The stock repair under the fore arm was probably where a cork ball was attached. If so, then the rifle was originally owned by a serious target shooter.

Hope this helps. Thanks for sharing!

I was looking at some rifles in Brophys book and thought it could be where a cork ball once was. Any way to trace the serial?

With few exceptions, the original shipping records for pre-WWI sales rifles have not surfaced. The records were kept at Springfield Armory.

Hope this helps.
