A friend in Connecticut asked me to research a M1941 for him. In the process I discovered it on Gunbroker. This is not my area but intuitively, I think it reeks. Would appreciate an expert's opinion.
Thanks-Keith

The SRS list of DCM Rifle Sales 1922-1942 shows #1343881A1 NM was sold Sept. 6, 1939. It is conceivable, but I consider it unlikely, that whomever bought it in 1939 was a Marine or perhaps the buyer gave it to the USMC at the start of WWII. More likely the rifle was bought by a civilian hipower shooter who had the target scope mounted on it, or perhaps the scope was attached to the rifle by a subsequent owner.
All I can find in a couple of reference books (Brophy's and Plaster's) is the USMC 1903 used an A5 Winchester or Unertl 8X. The rifle is a documented 1903A1 NM but I think it will be difficult to connect it USMC usage.

Hi Herschel
This rifle was discussed on the 1903/A3 thread a couple of days ago and dismissed as incorrect by some experts. I think that it is still on the first page of the thread.

If you look at the scope markings closely, you can tell that it is a commercial Unertl scope with a high serial number way outside the USMC Sniper serial range, and you can also tell that the "USMC Sniper" markings were engraved into the scope long after it was made. The handguard is modified incorrectly for a 1941 Marine Sniper, and I am sure there are more issues with it if the photos were better.
Too many issues to dump $15,000 for this rifle in my opinion. The fake markings on the scope set the tone for the rest of the rifle.
