Here is the Colt. It was sold to the Canadian Government and issued to Lt. Pearson. Later is was handed down to Lt O'Brien, his nephew and carried in WW ll.. The bore is in excellent condition.... The term "been there, done that" certainly applies to this Colt..... :eusa_dance:

Definitely has that "been there, done that" provenance. Was it customary for the Canadian forces to engrave the name and rank of the person to whom a pistol was issued? Thanks for the post, John. Very interesting bit of history.

Yes it was common to mark their sidearms.. I have owned at least two others so marked...

Lines always so smooth, never sharp edges

That looks familiar! Good to "see" you, John.

Canadian officers usually bought their own uniforms, including their sidearm. They commonly engraved their names so that their government didn't try to take the pistol back at some point.

What's good about Canada is they have good archives and the info is easy to obtain like these War Diaries from the 2nd Division.... I have owned several Colts and two Inglis BHPs that were used in both wars....

Is that "war diary" kind of like a ship's log ?? Where they briefly outline events of the day ??

John, Jim Oldfield was my Department Chair at OSU in the mid 70's. I have great admiration for the man so please let me know should you decide to let his pistol travel down the road. Thanks.

When I knew him, Dr. Oldfield was a gentleman's gentleman and a world-class scientist.

I tend to collect guns with histories, otherwise their just guns......

Here is the Colt M1911 A1 I was given by a Marine Captain in 'Nam and it certainly has a combat history. Talk about the right gun at the right place, at the right time in the right hands!
