Not a cadet. 50-70 TD is close but not correct.

Bought a nice shooter a while back. Bore is really nice. Looks new except for the last 3 inches or so that has the lightest frost. Stock has been sanded. Barrel is 29 5/8 inches long. Front site 1 1/4 from muzzle. Numbers match 23063. 1863 lock. 1870 bolt. Any idea what year made on these pre 73 rifles?

I'm guessing it's a cut down rifle. Cadets are not supposed to have sling swivels. Barrel looks nice but has evidence the front site was mounted by someone other than springfield. Lock plate shows sanding and reblue.

Nice-looking rifle and should be a fun shooter. It pretty well has to be a shortened Model 1868 rifle, done by party unknown, as, aside from the swivels, the number is WAY higher than could possibly occur on a proper Cadet. What is the muzzle diameter, and do you know if it will accept a bayonet? As you say, the stock has been heavily sanded, so much so as to completely eliminate the flats in the lock area. In short, it isn't "right" but how it got that way is a mystery.

Thanks for the response. You are correct. The muzzle is .765 in diameter. A little too big. Forgot to include that info.

Sound like you have the second edition of the conversion of the 1863 Springfield into the 50-70 conversion, barrel was ream out for brazed in liner.

No, the rifle pictured is an "unofficially" shortened Model 1868 Rifle, which was itself not a conversion (though it did use a number of old parts) and in most cases did not - some sources to the contrary - have a lined barrel. You must be thinking of the Model 1866 Rifle, a.k.a. "Second Allin Conversion", which did have lined barrels, exclusively.
