I don't why I feel this way, but I hope the two Germans both got M1 thumbs from the Garands! Dean-DGR
All I can think of is: One dead American soldier for every gun they are holding.
I'm thinking that picture was probably only a couple of days old on this date 70 years ago.

Id drop my K98 too...
If they only knew that they have in their hands some items that would be worth probably $100,000 in 70 years.
Their U.S. counterpart is pictured on page 24 of the Jan., 2015 "American Rifleman" under the caption "Bring Enough Guns?". The photo, dated 10DEC44, shows a GI laden down with German machine guns and submachine guns. The grin on his face seems to say, "Hey mom, look what I found!".

They were on borrowed time.
All I can think of is: One dead American soldier for every gun they are holding.
Lets hope that, at worst, the American soldiers ended up in a POW camp and came home at wars end to live a long and happy life. God bless Americas "Greatest Generation".
Those guys probably wish they had a comparable battle rifle issued to them. The 98 was a great bolt gun, but the M1 was a lot better.
I thought it was an interesting photo. I have seen many photos of US Soldiers with enemy small arms, but this was the first I've
seen with M1 Garand's in the hands of enemy soldiers.

I once saw a pic of a German using an M1 carbine. He was standing alongside a tank or something.

It has always been common pratice for the victor in battle to scronge the field of any serviceable weapons an ammo.

the Germans made use of everything they could find. But capture an American with a luger, so the story goes, and he is shot on the spot.

I once got to talking with a German bus driver about their gun laws and how they have so many restrictions. He shrugged and said "Jeder hat etwas zur Seite gelegt..." (Everyone has something set aside...). I always figured they were German weapons, but they could just as easily have been foreign.

My French friend says the same. Rural area farmers, etc. seem to always have something in their barns/cellrs.
