I picked up this Remington 1903 bolt. It's a little too early for my rifles I think. What serial number range would this bolt fit? Thanks

Beginning of production...3000000 through to approximately 3050000/3060000~

S/N 3000100 through S/N 3010000.

Perhaps 3050000/3060000 is a bit high but I would like to point out that I have 3026313. It's original and exhibits all the early features...including the bolt stop. I would recommend that if your rifle is any where near these ranges as we suggest that you check to see if that discerning feature (bolt stop) is present~

I just realized that I have overlooked an important fact...your bolt has the early small gas escape hole! I admittedly stand corrected due to this oversight on my part.

The bolt in the pictures is not contemporary with S/N 3026313. But I cannot rule out the possibility that S/N 3026313 may have left the Remington factory with a bolt like that in it.

I am editing to add this post script to acknowledge that we posted simultaneously. You caught the discrepancy! :icon_salut:

My rifle's bolt does have the large gas escape hole John~

Thank you Gentlemen. I would assume now I need an extractor with a small gas hole and a forged extractor collar?

Affirmative...the extractor preferably marked with an "R". Just curious, is the bolt in question a favorable match for any of your rifles?

What was the approximate serial number range when the bolt stop feature dropped off?

No, mine are higher but I'm going to the Louisville show next month. Maybe I can find it's mate. I own 3296552, 3278935, and 3190522.

Well then, good luck in Louisville! I've heard that's quite a show...it appears then that you have a few mid going-towards late examples in your collection. To me, the most interesting aspect of the Remington M1903 is/are all the changes that took place in the design and manufacturing of the Remington '03 in a relatively short period of time...and war time none the less! And of coarse we all know what the end result was; the Model 03A3. The aforementioned 3026313 is the earliest rifle in my collection and 3353575 is the latest. Put those two next to each other and the list of differences is fairly long yet, less than a year in time separates them...and not to mention that the Model 03A3 was also in production when the numbers were struck on 3353575!

I have 3,003,256. I can see several differences between it and the two "Red Star" rifles I have, 3,028,401 and 3,051,437. Mainly, the finish on the parts is much smoother.

My "odd man out" is 3,283,084. It has a very early receiver and bolt, even though a high serial number. The best that can be guessed is that both parts were rejected and later adjusted/repaired and passed through ...with a much higher serial number! The bolt is the very early one with the small gas escape hole.

Pretty Rare Bolt I Think

Yes they are; but try to find the internals that match it !! They are seen even less frequently. I looked for several years to find them but got lucky at a gunshow finally.

I already have the internals so I'm good with that.
