View Full Version : What do you shoot in a RR 1-9 bbl.?
I have a Armalite AR A2 1-9. The rifle came with a Mic. compensator (noisy under the roof at the range). I wanted an A2 flash hider and the shop put a RR bbl. on. I'm sitting on a load of Greek NATO 5.56 (55gr.) that cycled in the Arm. bbl. but not in the RR bbl. The RR bbl. is a std. model, nothing fancy. Black Hills blue box (55gr.) cycles fine, but at a cost.
Just wondering what others may shoot with this bbl. before I buy a few boxes of different brands to try out. It's 0 deg. with a wind so I won't be heading to the range any time soon. If there are no good answers I'll bite the bullet and buy Black hills again. Thanks,
Dave
I have a couple of RR's but all I shoot are reloads. Sorry can't help much.

It should shoot those 55's. What do you mean by not cycling? Does the bolt go back but not far enough to strip a new round from the magazine? Did you ask your shop?
Mostly I shoot 62 gr in 1/9 twist. They seem to do better.
anything from 45gr to 69 gr should do pretty good.
About every third round "stovepipes". When I compare the Greek NATO ammo to Black Hills, it looks like it has an awful lot of lacquer on the cases. When it's warmer, I'll try some US-made 55gr. and see how it goes. I may be suffering from that PA Dutch habit of squeezing the nickle till the buffalo craps and buying cheap ammo. And, I'll stop by the shop. Thanks everyone.
I'm a bit confused here. Is the Greek ammo brass cased or steel cased ammo? If steel cased it's not NATO spec and not Greek. Most likely Russian or other country that was under their control at one time as NATO doesn't use lacquered cases.

I "had" a 1 in 9 twist barrel.
I used to shoot in NRA highpower matches.
I found that SOMETIMES it would work on the 75 grain hornady bullets and sometimes it would not (w/ the same load but different lot number of bullets).
I could shoot 55, 62, 68 and 69 reliably but not 75's on up.
I sold the upper to a friend who only shoots surplus stuff in 55 grain and I bought a 1 in 8 upper from DPMS w/ target grade sights for "service rifle".
That solved my problem.
A good load for the 1 in 8 (and a 1 in 7 that I have also) is:
with either the 77 grain or 80 grain sierra match king bullet
LC brass (I use NEW Winchester brass for the 600 yard line)
24.5 grains of Varget (good luck finding that now)
and standard small rifle winchester brand primers.
REMEMBER.. ALL DISCLAIMERS APPLY. My rifle is different then yours. Reduce loads 10 percent and work up from there.

Dave,
My son builds a few ARs, over the course of a year. There are a 'lot' of things that can be changed on them. I would suggest that you take it back to your shop, and explain to them what is happening. Perhaps they can come up with a solution to your problem. ( take some ammo as well. ) Good Luck, and don't give up on it as of yet.

I reload only, but the Sierra HPBT Match 69 grain works fine in my Colt with 1 - 9 barrel. Mine shoots best with the Sierra HPBT 55 grain (not a match bullet) which is a true hollow point. It has a very long bearing surface, and shoots great.

Make sure to dismantle the bolt and clean it. Test the gas rings to make sure they do the job and apply a bit of grease to the rings.
