Is the barrel 22" and properly crowned? M1899 carbines are rarely faked - it is the earlier models, particularly the elusive M1898, where you have to be very careful. Am not at my number list just now, but will look this evening. Presence of the band spring (unless the pin prep is also there!) virtually assures that the stock is real.

Frank Mallory listed many (approx. 135) Model 1899 Carbines (in Appendix 20, "The Krag Rifle Story", 2nd edition: 'Serial Numbers of Known U.S. Krags') in the serial number range from #341,602 to #362433. Some clusters of Model 1898 Rifles also appear in this serial number range. There are also a few Model 1899 Carbines with lower (312,005 & 316,722) and higher numbers (368,608, 368,774 & 420,457), outside this range. Eight Model 1899 Carbines listed are in the 345,xxx 'range' in Mallory's 'Appendix 20'.

Sounds like the real article to me, Mike. How's the condition?

If your receiver is 1899 it is a carbine as there were no 1899 rifles. John

The carbine is a pending sale. Answers to some of questions. The crown is rounded like the rifles I have. Receiver is dated 1899. On the finish, all I have are pictures. I would call it 70%. Stock is sanded. Money is at 600.00. E-mail with owner he called bore bright-shiny.

Attached photos show a correct Model 1899 carbine front sight and the 1901 carbine rear sight. An 1899 carbine (with 1901 sight) potentially may have either the rifle style hand-guard or later 'humped' carbine hand-guard and be correct.

If the carbine is original and the price was $600, the buyer got a great deal!
