Hello All,
Quite a while back a user asked about a 1911A1 he had with AU stamped in the usual place for rebuild marks. I replied that I also had a Colt with the same rebuild stamp. No one on the board could ID what the "AU" stood for. Many other rebuild marks (AA for example) were well known but not the AU mark. Please take a look at the sign posted in this thread in the Gun Talk section.

Could this be the answer to the meaning of the AU mark??
