I took some photo's of the rear sight on my Rod Bayonet rifle, for one of the guy's who wanted to borrow them. So here they are if anybody else would also like to see them too...

Is it my imagination or is the elevation knob slotted for a coin?

John, pretty close... it's slotted for the rim of a 30-03. Unlike the Krag, which had only a slot for the rim of the 30-40 cartridge, the Rod Bayonet knob is specially slotted for the Rimless cartridge. The shallow cuts on either side of the slit allows the rimless 30-03 or 30-06 case head to fit nicely into the slot. It's really ingenious.

It looks sturdier than its replacement.

Thanks for the info Fred. Learn something new every day at Culver's thanks to the men here who like yourself share so freely.
Never noticed it on the Krag. Will have to keep an eye open for it.

That slot actually showed up on late 1898 Krag rifles and is not peculiar to the 30-03.

The knob on Krag rifles is supposed to have just the slot. After the 1903 Rod Bayonet rifles were disassembled, their knobs and often their sight leafs were mounted on some Krags and can be found on Krags to this day. Honest Injun. Look it up.

Watch closely in some of the scenes from the movie "Sergeant York," with Gary Cooper. Sometimes his 03 has this type of rear sight.
