From the bare hills - which would have been covered with houses by then - I suspect not - perhaps one of the forts on the Marin headlands, north of the GG Bridge (which of course wasn't there yet). The Presidio is fairly level; hard to imagine as having that topography.

When I bought that picture I didn't have a glass to look at,I thought they were holding Krags.Tried to make a bigger picture but couldn't get it. Just a guess on location,no idea.

From the old parade field down by the SF Bay and look up at the bluff towards the bridge and golf course area that is a steep bluff ( where the old gun batteries were located). The presidio was not flat. That said the picture could have been taken in the bowl across the bridge in fort baker. Fort baker is surrounded by steep bluffs. Just a thought.

I grew up in this area, and think there is too much distance, with no sign of habitation, for it to have been taken IN the Presidio of SF. "Fairly level" is not the same as "flat". My vote still goes to the Marin headlands - if not some other inland post in Northern CA, even near the arsenal at Benicia perhaps.

most likely .. not enough buildings or emplacements for a picture in early 1900's to be PSF. The ice has moved on and the boats are now running to the island. Once the weather warms up I'll shoot over and do a scouting mission for some pics of the old range.
