So Im continuing to pack stuff up and I found this op rod I forgot I had! Ive never seen anything like it. It doesnt have any evidence of welding. Measurements are within spec. Only thing out of the ordinary is the drawing number, its a typical 6535382 but instead of SA,IHC,HRA its "AI". It doesnt appear to have any other markings, and the markings are crisp.

Any ideas?

As far as I know, the "mystery" continues. Couple of years ago someone received an M1 via the CMP, it had a similar op rod.

Inland Division of General Motors used the "AI" on some of the parts manufactured for the M1 Carbine. AI, at least for Inland stood for Autoyre-Inland. Since they were already under a government contract at the time I wonder if they made these Garand op rods?

No , otherwise you would have seen more of them around. My guess is foreign manufacture
