I am trying to figure out why you would want to remove the big knob from the mount. This actually came up with my DCM D's mount because the screw stripped. Had zero float and I was tightening down my knob with pliers cushioned with cleaning patches.

I was trying to figure out how to repair it but it seems to be a factory manufactured permanent assembly. If I understand what you are asking about, what I am not sure is why, uniess you are trying to replace the mounting screw. I eventually gave up on the idea.

excuse me for being misambidextrous

i screwed the mount and the ring together with the knob and now i can''t separate them.

i didn't mean i wanted to remove the knob by itself

as it is now, if i want to remove the scope from the rifle i have to remove it from the ring with an allen wrench and leave the ring installed on the rifle attached to the mount

the big knob doesn't turn at all

thank you

As I expect you know the M1D bracket is a clamshell affair. The two halves are joined at the top edge by a permanently installed hinge. The bottom half is secured with two Allen head cap screws. Once a scope is installed the whole assembly is fastened to the barrel block using the large knurled knob.

If the knob won't easily unscrew I suspect 1. the threads are horribly bollixed up or 2. some really permanent thread locker was used.

Can you post a picture?

Goo, there's a small pointed stud beneath the knob that contacts the serrations under the knob (similar to the elevation knob in the regular sight) to keep it from moving. You should have heard clicks as yo tightened it. Not sure this caused your problem but take a look there as something else may also have wedged itself under the knob.

don't have a problem with the allen screws on the ring..

it's the big knob that won't turn ccw to unscrew to separate the ring from the mount.

i'm guessing the knob should pull up a bit to disengage from the pointed stud but it don't.

its tight enough and I can adjust the scope position by loosening the allen screws (to slide it fore and aft) but right now the ring is apparently permanently screwed (via the big knob) to the mount.

will post a photo but it won't show anything unusual

note: I haven't had the mount/ring installed on a barell yet

how hard have you tried to back off the knob(screw), the detent may be tight to the block, put some oil on it and with common sense use a rag and chanel locks pliers try to back it off. it went on it has to come off the same way.

See item 58 on the drawing. Thats the spring loaded plunger that engages the grooves on the back side of the large knob. If you use some penetrating oil and try slipping a very thin blade between the bracket an the pointed end of the pin you may be able to disengage it.

From your post it sounds like you test fitted your mount to the barrel which is not yet installed and now are somewhat stymied. I assume you are building a D or re barreling one. This is the opposite problem from what I had with my DCM lottery one. I eventually had National Match Armory lock tite mine. Please let us know how you solve it.
