View Full Version : 05 barrels
A little help, please, from the esteemed authorities on this website.
1. Is it known when the program to alter/rebuild 1903/03 rifles into the 1903/06 pattern ended?
2. I have the impression that in addition to the alteration of 1903/03 rifles, surplus 1903RB and 1903/03 barrels, dated 05 with no month, were altered and used in manufacture of 1903/06 rifles well into the first decade of 1900. Is that so? How long did the supply last?
All responses gratefully received.

I believe I remember reading that SA performed alterations into 1910. Definitely an interesting topic.

(1) 1910.
(2) No. I have seen no evidence that any significant supply existed. Indeed, I have seen ample evidence that no supply existed.
Hope this helps.

John and C.S. Ferris published an interesting little book entitled "Springfield Model 1903 Service Rifle Production and Alteration, 1905-1910" quite a few years ago. Unfortunately, it is long since of out of print and copies now are $125 and higher. I've found my copy very useful.
Here's what the book looks like...

Excellent books! They contain a lot of great info on the early1903's. Fred are all those your books? Ray
Yes, they are Ray, and two more that I just found hidden away. Seven in all I count.
Hey, if any of you guys have been looking for this book, Make me an offer for one of mine via Private Message. Heck, I don't need but just one copy for myself.
Book hoarder!!!!!!!

Fred,
You have more copies than I do!

Lol! I got a little carried away long time back when I found a warehouse with a box of them. I believe they're all sold out now, long ago.

We printed 1500 copies. It took us several years to sell them all. Ferris handled all the ordering and shipping. Most were sold at wholesale to dealers and retailers.

It's a pity there can't be a reprint. A little book with a long name, but a mighty useful one.
There's gotta be far more than 1500 guy's who are currently interested in the information available in those books. Supply and demand.
Here's mine....:1948:

I think with modern publishing techniques they could be printed on demand very cheaply. I wish some old book nerd (hint hint) got the rights and forwarded royalties.
Will $50.00 buy one of these? Dokcop@gmail.com

I'm late to this topic, but, would it be possible to convert it to "print on demand" - assuming that the copyright holder(s) were agreeable?
Does it contain photographs? If so, are they of a quality that would stand copying one more time.
Was it done digitally, or, the old-fashioned way? In other words, does it (even if only the text) exist in electronic form?
This is only a very hazy suggestion at this point, which cannot be acted upon immediately, but I am going to have to self-publish my second book. To do that, I need to become a "publisher" as defined by the various self-print outfits. After I take care of my own book, I MAY have enough working experience, and MAY have the desire, to pursue other projects. Just a thought - NO commitment, at all, at this point.
