I have what I believe is a Springfield Armory M1911 barrel marked with an "S" over a "P" on the left lug. Clawson's book indicates that barrels marked with an “S” over a “P” were used in the 127,000-127,978 S/N range plus post-WWI rebuilds.
However, on my barrel the letters are stamped vertically, not horizontally. Has anyone ever seen a genuine Springfield barrel marked this way?
Thanks.

It sounds like the barrel that you describe is of the same vintage whether stamped vertically or horizontally. It could be either way in the 127,000 to 127,978 serial number range.

Thanks Duane. The illustration in the book showed horizontal letters so I was not sure if vertical letters were a legitimate variant.

These are all between the wars barrels or at least have the shoulder instead of a smooth transition in front of the lug, so it doesn't appear that the S P placement indicates anything.

Thanks Johnny.
I also have a later SA barrel that has the step on the bottom at the front of the chamber.
The barrel I'm asking about does not have the step. Funny enough, I saw another just like it (much nicer than mine) for sale yesterday at a show.
