Anyone have the specs for the set screw in the rear sight base?

Curious if they are an oddball size or something I may be able to procure locally.

Thanks.

Dear M1Grandy:

Why bother? http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/USMilitary-33541/Rifles-42386/SpringfieldModels-40111/Springfield1903A3-42095/PartsList-42071.htm?page=1

top of the page all the separate parts (mostly) of the 03a3 rear sight.

Why bother you ask? Mainly because the set screw I'm looking for is not listed on any of the parts sites I've checked. Not every '03A3 rear sight had one from new.

Also, I have 8-10 damaged sights to rebuild/salvage and a fifty cent set screw at my local Ace is quicker and a big cost savings over a minimum price of $2.35 plus shipping from GPC.

Not only do I not know what it is, I don't even recall seeing it discussed on this or similar forums. If other thread pitches on the rifles are any indication, it won't be what we consider "standard" today. I've never seen any 03A3 drawings that may help either. Sorry. If you are just rebuilding otherwise damaged parts then go for a modern threaded set screw. If you have one that is threaded but missing the original screw, take the base with you to the hardware store.

It appears to be 5-40 thread.

I dug out my great grandfathers machinist chest and a 5-40 tap ran through the holes cleanly.

Finding 5-40 slot head set screws locally may be a bit of a challenge but I'll give it a try.
