i'm sure there are a lot of people way smarter than me who believe they are effective...but i'm thinking the average working class military sniper would just as soon do without them..

Don't know if this is what your looking for, but some good info on what is and was in use. Both good articles non the less.

From Wiki: U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Steve Reichert - Killed an Iraqi insurgent and possibly injuring two more hiding behind a brick wall with a shot from 1 mile in Lutayfiyah, Iraq on 9 April 2004. Reichert was using a Barrett M82A3 .50BMG rifle loaded with Raufoss Mk 211 multipurpose rounds. During the same engagement Reichert eliminated an Iraqi machine gunner pinning down a squad of Marines from a distance of 1,614 m (1,765 yd).

His article is on the development of the DARPA XM3. The rifle barrels are threaded so as to use a brake or suppressor, according to use. Most of the slings on use on the XM3 are our Turner AWS Biothane M1907 Slings, which were the issue slings for the rifle.

After using all different types for the last 50 years, I tried none at all on my last two builds in September. Verdict is still out, but it is looking very promising.

A silencer functions as a noise, recoil, and flash suppressor. I was surprised the first time I shot one in 338 Lapua and just watched the 300 yard impact through the scope as the cross hairs wiggled a bit. It was a bit orgasmic.

The flash suppressor on the M14 rifle serves as both a flash hider and as a break since it has a wide bottom rib that directs gasses upward, reducing muzzle rise. The flash is reduced, no completely eliminated, which not only conceals the flash from the enemy, but also helps eliminate the blinding flash from the operator.
