Looked at a 1903 NRA Sporter today belonging to a club member. The rubber add on buttplate is rotten. And he wondered if the M-1922 plate was used on the NRA Sporters? Thanks for the help.

I think the sporter plates were a think all their own. The 1922 was just a heavy checkered just like the NM 1903 plate, but had no trap. The rubber slip-overs used to be fairly easy to find, now that you mention it, haven't seen any around lately.

Thanks Randy A, Previous owner removed plate and used rubber slip on which stuck to the safe floor while turning to mush.

I think I have one (buttplate) for a sporter, moved and may take a while to find it though.

The Model of 1922 Springfield and the 1903 NRA Sporter both used the thick, shotgun type buttplate. They had a nitre blackened finish that was highly polished. The same type buttplate was used on the Model of 1922M1 Springfield rifles that were made up for issue to DCM affiliated rifle clubs. Many of these buttplates will be found with a parkerized finish. That is not correct for the NRA Sporter. The heavy checkered buttplate without trapdoor that Randy described above was used on the 1922M1 Issue Type rifle stocks and on the M2 Rifle stocks.

Herschel, Thank you so would e-bay item 181914447353 be able to be used?

That buttplate might be used but I would not buy it due to the extra hole with a screw head in it. The last picture makes the buttplate look too thick on the end with the extra hole. I appears to me be a well done gunsmith job meant to make the buttplate thicker on that end to change the angle of the buttplate. Correct buttplates can be found in the $100 price range.

Stop!

My Mistake. The rifle on the right is the Sedgley, not an M2. I don't have a photo of the butt of the M2 but will take one and post it if that would help.

The stock may be off an M2 Rifle but the buttplate is not correct for it. It appears to be a Model 70 Winchester buttplate. The 1922M1 and M2 Issue Type buttplate has heavy checkering and is without a trapdoor. It will be bent over the stock of the stock with a screw coming down into it from the top.

If the rifle on the right is your M2, I don't believe that butt-plate is original SA . . .

It looks to me to be a Model 70 Winchester (or maybe from a Model 64 Winchester). --Jim

The two NRA Sporter buttplates shown should let the OP know exactly what he should look for.

I have taken a photo of the M2 butt plate to correct the record. Sorry.

EriCal, this is the standard 1903 fine checkered plate used briefly before WWI and again postwar.

"The stock may be off an M2 Rifle but the buttplate is not correct for it. It appears to be a Model 70 Winchester buttplate." Yup, it's a beautiful Model 70 buttplate!

EriCal . . . .

I believe the pictured butt-plate is INCORRECT for the M2 . . . .Although it is a "screw-on" exchange!

The correct plate looks VERY similar, but has NO trap door and the checkering is much COARSER! --Jim

I've heard some limbsavers are doing this and if you call limbsaver, they will replace it.
