Excellent book by Stephen Dando Collins. Everything you could ever want to know about the Imperial Roman military machine from its beginnings under Augustus in the late first century A.D. to the sack of Rome by Alaric and the Visigoths in 410 A.D.

The book is in three sections, the first covers the men of the Roman heavy infantry from qualifications for enlistment, pay and benefits, tools and weapons, military ranks and decorations, uniforms, to rations and camp life. The second relates to legion organization including TO&E, marching order, artillery, cavalry, brief unit histories of each Imperial Legion, reservists and standards. The third is a battle history of the Roman Army.

I've been studying this stuff for years and there was a whole bunch of stuff that was new to me.

Very well written, almost reads like a novel, though a bit pricey at about $50.00 drive out but a valuable addition to the library of any student of military history.
